The Initiative

Twenty seasons of building the habit of learning

The Swarna Kana Olympiad is an official literacy initiative of Rotary International District 3291, organised by the Rotary Club of Madhyamgram Metropolitan as Lead Host Club, with the Rotary Club of Calcutta as Host Club from RY 2026–27 onwards, together with the District Literacy Committee, and co-hosted & associate-hosted by other Rotary Clubs of RID 3291.

What began in 2005–06 as an inter-school merit test has, over two decades, grown into a flagship educational project officially recognised by the District. Through the Swarna Kana App, it now reaches 2,500–3,000 students annually across Classes V to XII, aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and Rotary International's global Areas of Focus.

Every attempt is proctored online, and every school — from Kolkata's inner wards to towns two hours out — competes on the same paper, at the same time, on the same platform.

Olympiad Instructions for Students

  • Conducted under online video supervision
  • Exam date to be announced shortly
Round B

  • Attendance is recorded before the examination begins.
  • Candidature is cancelled if a student fails to attend the video-supervision session.
  • Any use of unfair or unethical means cancels candidature and is reported to the concerned school — such incidents also count against that school in the top-three-schools selection.

Awareness questions are drawn from Thalassemia, cervical cancer, polio, social awareness & ethics, mental health, and financial literacy — the same six modules covered in the awareness papers.

Number of questions, duration and subject-wise evaluation criteria may be modified if required. Date, time slot and subject-wise marks are announced after the Main Round.

Exam Date & Time Slot Announcements

The date and time slot for each round, along with any other exam-related details, will be published in the Notification section of the Swarna Kana App or the official web portal. Students are advised to follow the web portal or the Swarna Kana App for this information.

Awareness Modules

Six subjects, unseen-passage format

Every awareness module hands the student a short passage they've never seen, then tests comprehension — so the reading is the lesson.

TAB / TAE

Thalassemia Awareness

Genetics, screening and prevention of thalassemia — the season's largest module, with 488 attempts.

POW

Polio Awareness

Immunisation history and eradication efforts, reaching students across 63 pincodes.

VAE

Value Education

Ethics and civic responsibility — the highest-scoring module of 25–26, at an 82.2% average.

FLS

Financial Literacy

Savings, budgeting and everyday money management for school-age readers.

CCB / CCE

Cervical Cancer Awareness

Early detection and prevention, delivered in an age-appropriate reading format.

MHM B / E

Mental Health & the Mind

Emotional wellbeing and stress awareness, framed for younger and senior readers separately.

Every module runs as an unseen passage — no advance syllabus, just a text and a set of questions.

A school absent from a season's top 20 may still have registered students that season — this totals only their counted appearances, so treat it as a floor, not an exact lifetime total.
